Kudoboard alternative: an honest comparison, free options included
Updated · by Milad, founder of Ouvella
Kudoboard is the name most people know for an online group card, and for good reason: GIFs, videos, a gift card the whole team chips into, printed books, plans for entire companies. But it is not free beyond a 5-post demo, and every post is visible to anyone with the board link unless you pay for the Milestone board or a business plan. If what you need is one card for a farewell or a retirement, where no signer can read the others’ messages (only you and the recipient see them all), Ouvella does exactly that for €14.99 once, up to 200 messages, slideshow and keepsake booklet included. And if your budget is zero, the honest free options are further down.
Ouvella is ours. So we are not neutral: every fact about Kudoboard on this page was checked on kudoboard.com and its help center in October 2026, and we tell you plainly when Kudoboard is the better pick.
The short answer
Pick Kudoboard if…
- you want GIFs, videos and plenty of photos on the card
- you want to collect money for a gift card right on the board
- you want a printed, hardbound book delivered
- your company celebrates every birthday and work anniversary, all year
- you need a ready-made Slack or Microsoft Teams integration
Pick Ouvella if…
- you want no signer to see the others’ messages (only you and the recipient read them all)
- you want one flat price (€14.99) with the slideshow and keepsake included
- you are organizing one card: a farewell, a retirement, the end of an internship
- your team is international and wants the card in its own language
- you don’t want anyone to need an account
Is Kudoboard free?
Not for a card you can actually give. Kudoboard’s demo board is free, but it accepts up to 5 posts and cannot be delivered to the recipient through Kudoboard. Beyond that, each board is paid for:
- Lite, $6.99: up to 20 posts, messages, photos and GIFs, and you can attach a gift card.
- Premium, $9.99: up to 100 posts, plus video posts and a downloadable copy.
- Milestone, $19.99: unlimited posts, your own background and the slideshow.
Prices are in US dollars. For companies, the Business plan starts at $299 a year for 1 to 50 employees, and Kudoboard offers a free Business trial with no credit card required.
Ouvella isn’t free either, and we’d rather say so: €14.99 once, for the whole group, up to 200 messages. You can create the card and collect every message before paying, then pay before you give it. Signing is always free, with no sign-up. Everything about the card is on our group farewell card page.

The real difference: who sees what, and when
A Kudoboard fills up in front of everyone. By default, a post is viewable by anyone with the board link, so contributors see each other’s messages. That is part of the fun: you watch the board grow, laugh at the photos, and feel pulled in to add your own. If you want more discretion, Kudoboard offers private posts on Milestone boards ($19.99) and business plans: once the creator turns them on, each contributor can make their post visible only to themselves, the creator and the recipient.
On Ouvella, privacy is the rule for everyone, with no setting. When a coworker signs, they see how many people have signed so far, and their own message. Never anyone else’s. Only the person receiving the card reads everything, plus you as the organizer, so you can remove a message if needed. People write the real story instead of copying the message above theirs, and the surprise stays whole until the party.
When Kudoboard is the better choice
Kudoboard is a full-featured product built for workplaces, and it does plenty that Ouvella doesn’t. In these cases, go with Kudoboard.
You want GIFs and videos
Kudoboard has a built-in GIF library (GIPHY) from the Lite board up, and from the Premium board you can upload or record a video. Posts can also include an audio clip. An Ouvella message holds text, one photo (an animated GIF under 4 MB works too) and a one-minute voice message: no GIF library, no video.
You want to collect money for the gift on the card itself
Kudoboard lets you open a gift card collection on the board, open to every contributor or to the creator only, in USD, EUR, AUD, CAD or GBP. The recipient then redeems it, depending on the options available to them, as a prepaid card, a store gift card, a PayPal transfer or a charity donation. According to its help center, a processing fee is added to each contribution and the total is capped at $1,000 per board. Ouvella does not collect money: you paste the link of your own online collection, which only signers see.
You want a printed book delivered
Kudoboard turns the board into a hardbound book, from $32.99 for 20 pages ($0.42 per extra page), shipped to many countries; poster prints ship within the continental US. Ouvella ships nothing: its keepsake booklet prints at home or saves as a PDF.
Your company celebrates everyone, all year round
For birthdays, work anniversaries and everyday shout-outs, Kudoboard’s business plans are the right tool: unlimited boards, multiple creators, company branding, and on higher tiers Slack and Microsoft Teams integrations or automations. The Business plan starts at $299 a year for 1 to 50 employees. Ouvella is paid card by card, with no subscription and no business plan.
For a memorial or sympathy card
Kudoboard has dedicated Memorial boards ($99) to honor someone who has passed away. Ouvella does not offer this occasion.
For a huge group or very long messages
The Milestone board takes unlimited posts, and each post can run to nearly 10,000 characters. An Ouvella card stops at 200 messages of up to 1,000 characters each.
When Ouvella is the better choice
You want every message to stay private
No signer reads the others’ messages, however many people sign, with nothing to switch on and no upgrade needed. That is what gets you warmer, more personal messages, and it keeps the card from reaching the person leaving before the big day.
You want one simple price
€14.99 once, up to 200 messages, with the slideshow and the keepsake booklet included. No tiers to keep an eye on: at Kudoboard, going past 100 posts or getting the slideshow means the $19.99 Milestone board.
You want the moment, not just the card
At the leaving party, open the card on the room’s TV and start the slideshow: the card opens, the messages play full screen with their photos, then comes the list of everyone who signed. The person can also open it on their phone with the QR code, and send a thank-you that reaches the organizer. For a retirement, see our group retirement card; for an office birthday, the group birthday card.
Your team speaks more than one language
The card can be displayed in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian or Brazilian Portuguese, and each message stays in the language it was written in.
You don’t want anyone to need an account
Not to organize, not to sign, not to open the card. You keep a private organizer link to follow the messages coming in, and you can email it to yourself.
Free Kudoboard alternatives, honestly
Searching for a free group card online? Here is what genuinely works at zero cost, and where each option falls short.
A paper card passed around the office
Good: A few dollars, a real object, everyone’s handwriting.
Catch: Remote coworkers never sign it, everyone reads the messages above theirs, and it can land on the desk of the person leaving.
A form, then a homemade slideshow
Good: With Microsoft Forms or Google Forms, everyone answers on their own and only you read the replies. Paste them into PowerPoint or Google Slides for the party.
Catch: Free and private, but the layout takes you an evening, and photos or voice notes have to be gathered separately.
A shared document
Good: A Word document online or a Google Doc where everyone adds a paragraph: nothing to install, ready in a minute.
Catch: Everyone sees everything, the formatting quickly goes wild, and one wrong click can wipe out someone else’s text.
A thread in Teams, Slack or a group chat
Good: A channel or chat created without the person: everyone posts a message, photos, even a voice note.
Catch: Messages scroll away, and someone has to gather them before they can be given.
Kudoboard’s demo board
Good: Free, and a good way to try the tool.
Catch: Capped at 5 posts, and Kudoboard does not let you deliver it to the recipient: it is a trial, not a card to give.
If your company runs on Microsoft 365
Plenty of teams never leave Microsoft’s tools for this: a post in a Teams channel created without the person, a Microsoft Forms survey turned into a PowerPoint slideshow, or a Word document in a shared folder. If your company already pays for Microsoft 365, none of it costs extra. Kudoboard’s own Teams integration comes with its Pro plan ($449 a year for 1 to 50 employees, billed annually). Ouvella has no Teams app: you paste the card’s link in a Teams chat or channel, and everyone signs in their browser.
And Ouvella? €14.99 once, which is about €0.75 per person for a team of 20, and signing stays free for everyone. Whatever you choose, our farewell messages for a coworker and retirement messages will help with the words.

Frequently asked questions
Is Kudoboard free?
Only as a trial. Kudoboard’s free demo board is limited to 5 posts and cannot be delivered to the recipient through Kudoboard. In October 2026 single boards cost $6.99 (Lite, 20 posts), $9.99 (Premium, 100 posts, videos) or $19.99 (Milestone, unlimited posts, slideshow), and companies could try the Business plan for free with no credit card.
What is the best free Kudoboard alternative?
For zero cost, the closest thing is a form (Microsoft Forms or Google Forms) whose answers you paste into a slideshow: everyone writes without seeing the others, but you do the layout. A paper card or a shared document also works for a small team in one place. Ouvella is not free, but signing is: €14.99 once for the whole group, about €0.75 per person for a team of 20.
Can contributors see each other’s posts on Kudoboard?
By default, yes: a post is viewable by anyone with the board link. On Milestone boards ($19.99) and business plans, the creator can turn on private posts, and each contributor can then make theirs visible only to themselves, the creator and the recipient. On Ouvella this is the rule for everyone, with no setting: signers never see anyone else’s message.
Is there a Kudoboard alternative for Microsoft Teams?
Many teams simply stay inside Microsoft 365: a post in a Teams channel created without the person, a Microsoft Forms survey turned into a PowerPoint slideshow, or a shared Word document. Kudoboard itself offers a Teams integration on its Pro plan. Ouvella has no Teams app: you paste the card’s link in a Teams chat or channel, and everyone signs in their browser.
Can I add GIFs and videos to an Ouvella card?
No video and no GIF library: each message can include text, one photo (an animated GIF under 4 MB, uploaded like a photo, stays animated) and a one-minute voice message. If GIFs and videos matter to your team, Kudoboard is the better choice: it has a built-in GIF library and accepts videos from the Premium board up.
Can we print the card?
With Ouvella, yes: the card includes a keepsake booklet with every message and signature, to print at home or save as a PDF, while voice messages stay playable online. Kudoboard offers a JPG image of the board (Premium and Milestone), poster prints shipped within the continental US, and hardbound books from $32.99 shipped to many countries.
Can we collect money for a group gift?
On Kudoboard, yes: a gift card collection can be opened on the board, with a processing fee on each contribution and a $1,000 total per board, according to its help center. Ouvella does not collect money: you paste the link of your own online collection, which signers see and the person receiving the card never does.
How much does Ouvella cost for a large team?
Always €14.99, paid once by the organizer, for up to 200 messages, with the slideshow and keepsake booklet included. There is no subscription, and nobody needs an account: not to organize, not to sign, not to open the card.
