Virtual Advent calendar

A virtual Advent calendar, filled with the memories you share

Updated · by Milad, founder of Ouvella

Twenty-four doors, one for each day from December 1 to 24, and behind each one whatever you put there: a note, a photo, your voice, your song. Every door opens at midnight their time, even if they live on the other side of the world. Not Advent? Turn it into a countdown to your reunion, a birthday or a trip, with 3 to 31 doors. €14.99 once, no subscription, no account. You can also pay in your local currency at checkout.

Created before December 1, your Advent calendar opens its first door on the 1st at midnight, in the recipient’s time zone. After the 1st it is not too late: until the 24th, the doors of the days already gone are open as soon as it arrives.

What they discover every day

The surprise calendar in 3D: one door to open each day, the first ones already open.

What is a virtual Advent calendar?

It’s the online version of the classic calendar with little doors: instead of chocolate, each door hides a message, a photo, a voice note or a song. They receive it as a link (or a QR code) and open it on their phone. Each day a new door unlocks, all the way to December 24.

With Ouvella, you fill the doors yourself, with your photos and your own words. We call it the surprise calendar because it isn’t only for Christmas: it can also count down 3 to 31 days to any date that matters to the two of you.

How it works, in 3 steps

  1. Step 1

    Create the calendar

An Advent calendar (24 doors, December 1 to 24) or a countdown to the date of your choice. A title, a welcome note, a color, then the doors: a message, a photo, your voice, a link. You see the preview before paying.

  2. Step 2

    Send them the link

After payment (€14.99) you get a private link and a QR code: send it by text or email, or tuck it into a card. Before the first day, they see a countdown.

  3. Step 3

    A door opens every day

At midnight in their time zone: you pick where they live and the calendar takes care of the rest. Opened doors can be revisited any time.

No time to fill everything tonight? No problem: after payment you keep a private link to complete the doors whenever you like, even the day before. If a door is still empty the day before it opens, we send you an email reminder. And a door that is already open can still be edited.

Who is it for?

An Advent calendar for your partner is the December classic. But one door a day works for plenty of other countdowns too.

  • For your girlfriend or boyfriend

An Advent calendar made of your memories instead of chocolate: 24 reasons you love them, your photos, coupons for time together.

  • For a long distance relationship

Each door opens at midnight their time, even across time zones. No parcel to mail by mid-November, no shipping delays.

  • Before you see each other again

A countdown to the day you’re reunited, one door for each day left (up to 31).

  • Before a birthday

A week of surprises: 7 doors, and the last one opens on the day.

  • Before a trip or a big day

A vacation, a wedding, a move, the end of a semester abroad: one door a day until the date.

  • For a friend or family

A best friend studying far away, a grandma who loves photos: you don’t need to be a couple.

24 ideas to fill the doors

A door can hold a title, a message (up to 1,200 characters), a photo, an audio clip (your voice or a song) and a link. Mix the formats to keep it surprising: a memory, then a voice note, then a little challenge. And save the best door for last.

Free, homemade or €14.99?

A homemade Advent calendar, with 24 envelopes or tiny boxes, is lovely when you live together. Long distance, it has to be mailed by mid-November to arrive in time, and shipping abroad adds up. More ideas in our long distance relationship gift guide.

Free online Advent calendars exist too: if you just want to share one picture a day, they do the job. We compared the main ones, free and paid, in the best virtual Advent calendar makers.

Ouvella’s surprise calendar is a paid product, built for one person who matters: each door opens at midnight in their time zone, you record your voice right in the browser, a door’s contents stay hidden until its day, and you can keep filling the doors all through December, with a reminder the day before if one is still empty.

Would you rather give one big surprise on Christmas Eve? The surprise mini-film (letter, photos, music) opens at the time you choose. More seasonal ideas: our original Christmas gift page.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the virtual Advent calendar cost?

€14.99, paid once per calendar, whether it has 3 doors or 31. There is no subscription and no account to create. Creating it and watching the preview are free: you only pay when you want the link to send.

What time do the doors open?

At midnight in the time zone of the person receiving the calendar: you choose where they live when you create it. Until then a door stays locked, and its contents are not even sent to their phone, so there is no way to peek.

Can I put photos, videos or music behind a door?

Each door holds a title, a message of up to 1,200 characters, one photo, one audio clip (your voice recorded in the browser, or a file such as a song in mp3 or m4a) and one link. For a video, add its link, for example to YouTube.

Do I have to fill all 24 doors before paying?

No. After payment you keep a private link to fill or edit the doors whenever you like, even the day before. If a door is still empty the day before it opens, you get an email reminder. And if it does open empty, they see a short note saying it is still being prepared.

Does anyone need an app or an account?

No, neither you nor the person receiving it. The calendar opens in the browser, on a phone or a computer, from a private link or a QR code. It can be shown in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian or Brazilian Portuguese.

Can I make one for something other than Christmas?

Yes. Choose “Countdown”, set the big day and the number of doors (3 to 31): 12 doors before you see each other again, 7 before a birthday, 31 before a big trip. The last door opens on the day itself.

Is it too late to start an Advent calendar?

No. With the Advent calendar, if you start after December 1, the doors of the days already gone open as soon as they get the link, and the rest follow one a day until December 24. You can also pick a shorter countdown that ends on Christmas Eve.

Does the person get a reminder when a door opens?

If they want one. From the calendar, they can leave their email address and get a short email each morning a door opens, with the link back to it. The email never gives away what is behind the door, you never see their address, and they can stop the reminders in one click.

Is there a free digital Advent calendar?

Yes. AdventMyFriend is completely free, with no sign-up, and MyAdvent has a free version with voice notes of up to 20 seconds and videos by YouTube link. Ouvella costs €14.99 once: each door stays hidden until midnight in their time zone, you record your voice right in the browser, and you can fill the doors after paying, with an email reminder the day before a door that is still empty. We compared eight makers, free and paid, on our best virtual Advent calendar makers page.

What to put in a virtual Advent calendar?

Things that fit on a screen and feel personal: a short message or a memory, a photo from the same day last year, a voice note, the song of a moment you shared, a link to tonight’s recipe or to a movie you start at the same time, a coupon, or a clue to a bigger surprise. Mix the formats so each morning feels different, and keep the strongest door for the 24th. Each Ouvella door holds a message, a photo, an audio clip and a link; our Advent calendar ideas page has many more fillers.

Is there an Advent calendar for couples?

Yes, in a few forms. Shops sell couples’ Advent calendars with date-night cards, games or small treats for two. You can make one yourself with 24 envelopes, each holding a plan for one evening. Or one of you makes a digital calendar for the other: with Ouvella, each door opens at midnight in the recipient’s time zone, which suits couples who live apart. Some couples make one each and swap links.

What is the best Advent calendar for my girlfriend?

The one that fits her December. If you live together, a store-bought calendar she will enjoy every morning (beauty, tea, chocolate) or a homemade one with 24 small notes works well. If you live apart, a digital calendar arrives on time, and each door can carry your voice and your photos. Either way, what she will remember are the doors only you could fill: a memory, an inside joke, a plan for the two of you. Our Advent calendar for your girlfriend page has 24 door ideas.
