Online countdown calendar
A countdown calendar to give: one door a day until the big day
Updated · by Milad, founder of Ouvella
Not a timer on a screen: a gift for one person. You choose the date (a wedding, a reunion, a retirement, a trip, a birthday) and 3 to 31 doors. One opens every day at midnight their time, with your note, photo, voice or song behind it, and the last one opens on the day itself. Nothing to install: it’s a link. €14.99 once, no subscription, no account.
What they discover, day after day

- One door a day, at midnightEach door opens at midnight where they live, weekends included. The next ones stay locked, and their contents aren’t sent ahead of time.
- A live countdownBefore the first door, the time left until it opens; after that, the time until the next one.
- A note, a photo, your voiceBehind each door: your message, a photo, a voice note or a song, plus a link if you like.
- The last door, on the dayIt opens at midnight on the date you chose: the wedding day, the day you land, the first morning of retirement.
- The doors already openedThey stay open, so the whole countdown can be relived after the big day.
- A 3D calendar, not a Christmas oneOutside Christmas there is no snow or holly: it reads “Countdown” with your date, in one of 7 colors. A simple view is in the “⋯” menu.
A gift, not a widget
Most things called a countdown calendar are tools: a timer on a website, a widget on your phone’s home screen that shows how many days are left. They are free and handy, and they count down for you.
This one is a gift you prepare for someone else. You fill each door with something for them: a memory, a photo, a voice note, a song, a plan. They receive a link (or a QR code) and open one door a day at midnight their time, until the last one opens on the big day itself.
The buttons on this page open the editor on “Countdown” (not the Advent calendar): set the big day and the number of doors (3 to 31). The calendar counts calendar days, weekends included: if you are counting down the working days to a retirement, plan lighter doors for Saturdays and Sundays.
How it works, in 3 steps
- Step 1
Pick the date and the doors
Choose “Countdown”, set the big day and the number of doors, from 3 to 31. A 10-door calendar ending on June 20 opens its first door on June 11 and its last on June 20.
- Step 2
Fill the doors, send the link
A title, a welcome note, a color, then the doors. Preview it, pay €14.99 once, and send the private link or the QR code whenever you like: if the first door is still days away, they see a countdown to it.
- Step 3
A door every midnight
At midnight in their time zone (you choose where they live), a new door opens. Opened doors stay available, until the big day and after.
You don’t have to fill every door before paying: you keep a private link to complete or edit them until the last day, and we email you the day before a door that is still empty. You can also change the date, the number of doors or the time zone later: doors you have filled keep their number.
What to count down to
Any date that matters to one person. A few that work especially well, with a number of doors to start from:
A reunion
As many doors as days until you see each other again, up to 31; the last one opens on the day you land. For couples apart, see our long distance Advent calendar.
A wedding
The last 31 days, or just the last week, for your fiancé or fiancée: one door a day until “I do”.
A retirement
The last month at work, one door per day, for a parent, a partner or a close colleague.
A birthday
Seven doors for the week before, or one door per year for a milestone up to 31: a 30th in 30 doors.
A vacation or a big trip
Ten to fourteen doors of teasers: the view, the food, three words of the language.
With a child
A parent opens the day’s door with them each morning, before a birthday, the holidays or a grandparent’s visit.
Countdown door ideas, by occasion
A door holds a title, a message (up to 1,200 characters), a photo, an audio clip (your voice or a song) and a link. Take the group that fits your date, then add your own.
Before a reunion
- 1
Your plan for the first hour together, minute by minute.
- 2
A photo of the arrivals hall or the platform where you’ll be waiting, titled “Me, right here, soon”.
- 3
A voice note recorded at the end of a long day apart: what you’d tell them if they were next to you.
- 4
The list of things you’ve saved up to tell them in person, with the best one held back for the last door.
- 5
On the day: “I’m on my way”, with a photo of your ticket or your packed bag.
Before a wedding
- 6
The day you knew you wanted to marry them, in a few lines.
- 7
A photo from your first date, with the number of days you’ve been together since as the title.
- 8
A vow too silly for the ceremony: “I vow to always let you have the window seat.”
- 9
A voice message from a friend who will be at the wedding (record it on a phone, then add the file).
- 10
For the wedding morning: a short letter to read while getting ready, and the song of your first dance as a YouTube link.
Before a retirement
- 11
A photo from their very first year in the job, found in an old album or with a colleague’s help.
- 12
The things they will never have to do again: the 6:15 alarm, rush hour, the Monday meeting.
- 13
A voice message from a former colleague or their first manager (recorded on a phone, added as a file).
- 14
A photo of the place of their first retirement trip, with a coupon for it.
- 15
On the first day of retirement: what you admire in the way they worked, and what you hope they do with all that time.
Before a birthday
- 16
For a milestone, one photo per year of their life, from the baby picture to last summer (a 30th means 30 doors).
- 17
A memory from their birthday ten years ago, with a photo if you can find one.
- 18
A voice message from someone they haven’t heard from in a while.
- 19
Clues about the plan, one more piece each day: a place, a time, a dress code.
- 20
On the day: you singing happy birthday, recorded in the browser, and a real letter.
Before a vacation or a trip
- 21
A photo of the view they’ll wake up to, with the name of the beach or the street.
- 22
Three useful words in the local language, recorded in your best accent.
- 23
The link to the restaurant booked for the first night.
- 24
A packing list with one ridiculous item they must bring.
- 25
A song from the country you’re going to (a YouTube link plays inside the door).
With a child, opened together
- 26
A photo of them on the same day last year, with “look how much you’ve grown”.
- 27
A short story told by a grandparent who lives far away (recorded on a phone, added as a file).
- 28
A song to dance to before school, as a YouTube link that plays inside the door.
Saying goodbye to a colleague as a whole team? Our group retirement card lets everyone sign from one link, and our retirement messages help with the words.

Countdown app, paper chain or a calendar to give?
Countdown apps, widgets and websites show the days, hours and minutes left, usually for free. Perfect to watch your own big day approach; they aren’t made to carry your words to someone else.
A paper chain or a homemade countdown jar is lovely with children or at home: one ring or one note removed per day. It has to be there physically, so it doesn’t travel.
Ouvella’s countdown calendar is a paid gift for one person: you fill each door, it opens at midnight their time, a door’s contents stay hidden until its day, and the last door opens on the big day. The same product makes the Advent version, presented on our virtual Advent calendar page.
For a whole team, a calendar filled by one person isn’t the right tool: a group card lets every colleague sign one link. And for a single surprise on the day itself, the surprise mini-film opens at the time you choose.
Frequently asked questions
How does an online countdown calendar work?
You choose the big day and a number of doors (3 to 31), fill each door with a message, a photo, a voice note, a song or a link, and send a private link or a QR code. One door opens every day at midnight in their time zone, and the last one opens on the big day itself.
Is there a countdown calendar app to download?
No, on purpose: it’s a link that opens in the browser, on a phone or a computer, with no app and no account. It isn’t a home-screen widget either, it’s a gift you prepare for someone else. If you only want to see the days left until your own big day, a free countdown app or website will do that.
How many days can it count down?
Between 3 and 31 doors, one per day, ending on the date you choose. The date itself can be further away: you can send the link early and, until the first door opens, they see a countdown to it.
What time do the doors open?
At midnight in the time zone of the person receiving it (you choose where they live), every day, weekends included. A closed door’s contents are not even sent to their phone, so there is no peeking. Doors already opened stay available.
Can I make a retirement countdown calendar for a coworker?
Yes, if you fill it yourself: for example 31 doors for their last month, with photos and voice messages you collect from colleagues and add as files. If you would rather have every colleague write their own message, a group retirement card, signed by everyone from a single link, is the better fit.
Is it suitable for kids?
It isn’t a children’s product (no games, no chocolate), but it works well opened together: a parent or a grandparent fills the doors, and the child opens the day’s door with an adult each morning, before a birthday, the holidays or a visit.
Will it look like a Christmas calendar?
Only if it ends at Christmas. On the 3D calendar, the Christmas touches (snow, holly, “Merry Christmas”) appear only when the last door falls on December 24 or 25. Any other date gets a neutral calendar that reads “Countdown” with your date, in one of seven colors.
How much does it cost?
€14.99, paid once per calendar, whether it has 3 doors or 31. No subscription and no account. Creating it and watching the preview are free: you pay when you want the link to send.
